VTT to SRT Converter

Paste or choose a WebVTT / VTT file and convert VTT to SRT in your browser. The vtt to srt converter restores comma milliseconds and sequential cue numbers while keeping cue text, order, and timing.

This mode preserves subtitle line count, timestamps, and displayed text, rebuilds sequential SRT numbering, and drops VTT-only metadata such as NOTE blocks and cue settings.

Or paste VTT subtitle text below. Files are read locally in your browser.

What this converter does

  • Converts SRT to VTT with the same subtitle line count, timing, and displayed text.
  • Converts VTT to SRT for editor or platform handoff.
  • Extracts TXT from SRT or VTT by removing timing and keeping subtitle text order.
  • Runs locally in the browser with no upload and no login.

Converter boundary

This conversion expects VTT input. It does not upload files, process audio/video, or rebuild timing. VTT-only constructs (NOTE, STYLE, REGION, cue settings) have no SRT equivalent and are removed.

When to convert VTT to SRT

Editor and platform handoff

SRT is still the most widely accepted subtitle interchange format across video editors, marketplaces, and captioning tools. When a client, editor, or platform asks for SRT and your working file is WebVTT, this vtt to srt converter produces the SRT handoff copy without touching your original VTT.

What the converter removes

WebVTT can carry constructs that SRT cannot express: NOTE comment blocks, STYLE and REGION blocks, and per-cue settings such as line position or alignment. All of them are dropped, because keeping them inside an SRT file would break SRT parsers. The displayed text and the timing of every cue are kept exactly.

Cue numbers are rebuilt

SRT numbers every cue sequentially. The converter renumbers cues 1, 2, 3… in output order, so the file stays valid even when the source VTT used text identifiers instead of numbers or numbered cues irregularly. Cue order and timing are unchanged.

Timestamp precision

Both formats store milliseconds. The converter changes only the separator from a dot (00:00:01.000) to a comma (00:00:01,000). No rounding or shifting is applied, so the SRT timing matches the VTT cue for cue.

What the converter does not do

It converts the format only. It does not create timing from scratch, repair drift, translate, or analyze audio. If the goal is a timed deliverable from raw text, start with TXT to SRT or Script + Audio, then convert the finished subtitles.

VTT to SRT questions

Can I convert vtt to srt online for free?

Yes. Paste or choose a VTT file, pick SRT, and convert in your browser with no upload and no sign-in.

Does the vtt to srt converter keep my timestamps?

Yes. Timing is preserved cue for cue; only the millisecond separator changes from a dot to a comma.

What happens to NOTE and STYLE blocks?

They are removed. NOTE comments, STYLE and REGION blocks, and cue settings such as line:90% have no SRT equivalent and would break SRT parsers.

Will the cue numbers be renumbered?

Yes. The SRT output numbers cues sequentially from 1, so the file stays valid regardless of how the source VTT identified its cues.

Is VTT or SRT better for YouTube?

YouTube accepts both formats. Use SRT when another tool in your pipeline requires it; otherwise the original VTT uploads directly.

Are my subtitles uploaded?

No. Reading, conversion, preview, copy, and download happen entirely in your browser tab.

Does it fix timing or overlaps?

No. It converts the format only. Use the subtitle checker for timing, overlap, line length, and reading-speed issues.

Can I convert SRT back to VTT?

Yes. The reverse converter on /tools/srt-to-vtt adds the WEBVTT header and dot milliseconds while keeping the same cues.

Why does my VTT file fail to parse?

The file must start with a WEBVTT header and every cue needs a valid start and end time. The error message names the first block that could not be read.

Will multi-line cues survive conversion?

Yes. Line breaks inside a cue are kept exactly, so a two-line subtitle stays two lines in the SRT output.
